The blue-watered Lake Saimaa is the third largest lake in Europe. The sheer size of the lake makes it unpredictable; fisher and catch may have far to go before meeting. The lake has a total fishing area of 54,000 ha. Skilled fishers may land substantial catches in this vast area. In early spring, Lake Saimaa is an excellent place to troll for land-locked salmon and brown trout, among others. Perch may be fished by various means throughout the year, but June is usually the month for catching whoppers. Also pike may be fished throughout the year. In spring, when the water is open, by spinning, in summer by trolling and in winter by ice-fishing. Fishing from a boat is the most common method in summer. Fishing licenses may be obtained e.g. from fishing guide Teuvo Makinen. |
